I came across an old (1996) Charlie Rose interview with David Foster Wallace, as well as Jonathan Franzen and Mark Leyner, on the intertubes. The discussion centered around whether people read fiction anymore, amidst the proliferation of other choices. Wallace:

“Commercial entertainment, its efficiency, its sheer ability to deliver pleasure in large doses changes people’s relationship to art and entertainment, changes what an audience is looking for. I would argue it changes us in deeper ways than that.”
