I heard a small part of an interview with Stephen Sondheim on NPR yesterday, recorded in 2010. In it he described art as bringing order out of chaos. That seems to me to be only part of the equation. It’s not a complete definition, but rather a possible component.

The fight against entropy is for me one of the defining features of human life. Keeping my desk from overflowing with clutter, or my digital desktop with files, trimming my nails, shaving my beard, washing the dishes, taking out the trash… These are the kinds of things that comprise daily life, but not necessarily a work of art. I don’t dismiss the possibility, but as always, it is intention that is paramount.
